So, I managed to survive my second race weekend. I finished 15th out of 17 in Lightweight Supersport. I should have finished 13th; I was near the back of the pack, and there was this dude with a Kevlar suit just in front of me. I chased him for two or three laps, closing up in some turns where I was better, loosing ground in some where he was better. Finally, I made my move going into this big, banked left-handed bowl, and blew past him on the entrance. Stupidly, I wasn't paying attention to the guy in front of him, and was kind of surprised when I passed him, too. So surprised that I fixated on him instead of looking through the turn, ran wide, and let the both of them back by me. Damn, I couldn've dusted the pair of them. It really felt like racing though... Very cool. I also ran in one race called the GTU. It's relatively long, like about 30 minutes. Most of the bikes in it are 600s vs. my little 400 (and my inherent newbie slowness) so I got lots of practice being passed. I tried not to make any sudden moves, tried to pick a line early and keep to it. I don't think I gave anyone any trouble. The track was really crowded though, and there were a number of crashes (the 600 classes seem to be the worst for that). And they were really, really a lot faster than I was. I got kind of flustered, and ran off the track in same bowl I missed the pass in Supersport. I didn't dump, or even stop, and got back on for a couple of laps, but then I chickened out and pulled off before I got in any real trouble. Side story: they run the GTO at the same time; that's for 750's and above. I got lapped twice by a guy on a Ducati 916. That is one gorgeous bike, even from behind. :-> Next up: Bridgehampton on Memorial Day!
